8 Steps to Achieving Wellness
Promoting wellness has been more and more on my mind in the last couple of years for a variety of reasons:
First off, a really good friend of mine introduced me to some amazing wellness products and these products have been life transforming on several levels (especially to my family and I), but I’ll get into that later.

Secondly, I have learned a lot in the process of finding out about the products.
Life is full of lessons and there’s a saying that ‘we learn everyday’. There is a more extreme version of the same saying which is that ‘the day you stop learning is the day you die.’ Whatever version one adopts, the undeniable message is that education or learning never ends.
Ok, so I’ve always known that exercise is good for one and that being overweight has negative consequences. But only recently did I learn that the human body operates optimally when there’s a good balance between all the nutrients the body needs.
Now, for me, that was an amazing discovery because it led me to further discoveries as I began to look a little bit more into what contributes to achieving the wellness that allows you live your life on your terms.
I found out that the following will not only sustain your well-being but they are like the foundational steps in maintaining optimal nutritional health and balance:
1. Mindset Change:
The battles of life are won in the mind. Your mindset is the starting point for achieving nutritional balance. You must orientate your mind to appreciate the value of maintaining nutritional harmony otherwise you would be wasting your time. The mindset shift is the first step to committing to the lifestyle changes or action required to achieve nutritional balance.
Detoxification is one of the more widely used treatments and concepts in alternative medicine. It is based on the principle that illnesses can be caused by the accumulation of toxic substances (toxins) in the body. Eliminating existing toxins and avoiding new toxins are essential parts of the healing process. Toxins in the body include heavy metals and various chemicals such as pesticides, pollutants, and food additives. Drugs and alcohol have toxic effects in the body – The Medical Dictionary.
When we have not always treated our bodies kindly and have fed it unhealthily for years, chances are that we have stored toxins that prevent the digestive system from functioning properly. Detoxification enables one to make a ‘start on a clean slate’ on the road to restoring balance to the body.
3. Appropriate Lifestyle Choices
Your lifestyle choices have a huge impact on the outcomes you achieve – If you adopt an extreme lifestyle that involves hard work, hardly any rest, heavy smoking, drug and alcohol abuse, chances are that you are unlikely to achieve the natural balance your body needs to function optimally. The choice is yours to make. Change your lifestyle, choose moderation and begin to see the difference.
4. Taking Active Intentional Steps
You can take active steps to redress imbalances. Decide to cut out obviously harmful products from your life, such as cigarette smoking, drug abuse (prescriptive & non-prescriptive drugs), excessive alcoholic intake, etc. These steps have to be conscious, intentional and consistent
5. A Balanced Diet
Eating well means consuming the right combination/proportions of:
- Fats (yep fats too are good for you)
- Vitamins and
A balanced diet is one which has well-proportioned amounts from all food groups.

6. Consuming Adequate Quantities of Water and Fluids
We can live for days or even weeks without food, but without water, we would not last much more than a couple of days. As someone puts it, think of water like oil in a car. Fuel like food provides energy, while oil, like water in the body, helps everything to work properly. Water is an often overlooked essential nutrient to the body. It makes up 50-70% of the human body. Water ensures that our bodies remain a viable environment for chemical reactions to take place and it helps the kidneys to function normally.
7. Physical Activity
Exercise is key to maintaining the oh so needed well-being. Exercising regularly helps us maintain the right energy levels and alertness, not to talk about keeping us in the right shape. Although exercise only contributes about 20% to our weight management program, it is essential for maintaining proper bodily function. It is important to get the right amount of physical activity – regular exercise or work out. This could be just walking, playing football with friends or forming a dance class. The important thing is to get moving and keep moving!
Finally, the value of sleeping well can never be underrated. Our bodies need sleep, several hours of it every night to refresh and recharge. Without adequate sleep we soon become sluggish, disoriented, tired and cranky! Getting enough sleep keeps you sharp and focused! The chart below is a good guide for how much sleep you need depending on your age
I hope that these steps will help you starting or continuing your journey to wellness. Please post your comments to let me know how it helped you.
